What Has Tibetan Pulsing Yoga Got to do With Tibet?

(Simon Rees)

Tibetan MonasteryIn the last few decades, as part of an extended programme of cultural oppression, much of the spiritual wisdom and insight of hundreds of years of Tibetan tradition has been destroyed at the hands of the Chinese government, as well as some of the monasteries themselves with their religious relics and manuscripts.

Fortunately, part of this ancient wisdom has escaped from Tibet along with many of the monks and masters themselves as they fled for their lives over the border to India after the Chinese government first invaded in the 1950s.

As a result, Tibetan Buddhism has brought – for the first time in the history of the world – the great gift of its insight and practices to dozens of other countries around the globe, through the establishment of an international network of Tibetan monasteries.

Tibetan MonksUnfortunately, many of the monks who were able to flee Tibet were members of the younger generation, and therefore much of the wisdom of their elders has been lost. Among such ‘lost’ areas of knowledge was the ancient system of the ‘24 Lights’– which is known to a few Tibetan masters but not practised any more – although it forms part of the fundamental basis of meditation practice in Tibetan Pulsing Yoga.

There are several branches of Tibetan Buddhism, and although they each have the same goals as all forms of Buddhism the ultimate realization and liberation of oneself and all others there are many possible paths which take slightly different approaches to get there. Tibetan Pulsing Yoga is not a part of one of these traditional branches of Tibetan Buddhism, but contains traditional wisdom that has been re-discovered and expressed in a new way more suitable for modern times. Tibetan Pulsing Yoga practitioners around the world continue to maintain a close relationship with different Tibetan monasteries of different lineages, and feel a sense of affinity.
